Setting a SIP account in your Android phone is really easy with the integrated option available in Android 2.3 (API Level 9) and greater. This feature turns your Android device into a mobile Internet phone through the use of SIP protocol.

To do this, you must have a SIP account provided by a SIP Service Provider or a IP-PBX that supports this protocol. If you choice the first option, you can search in Google for "Free SIP Accounts" and you'll find a lot offering a free account. Other option is to install and configure your own IP-PABX. In a future tutorial I'll cover this topic extensively using Asterisk. Asterisk is a free software that turns an ordinary computer into a communications server.

For purposes of this tutorial, let's assume you have a valid account and know the following information:
  • username (we'll use user in this tutorial)
  • password (we'll use 123456)
  • sip server (we'll use sip.provider.com)
